Scotland Deposit Return Scheme Update

14 Jun
2023

The saga of the implementation of the Deposit Return Scheme continues but we believe everyone will be relieved to hear that the scheme is now delayed until at least October 2025.

Due to the rules on deregulation between the 2 jurisdictions of Westminster and Scotland, the UK Government had to grant the Scottish Government a temporary exclusion under Section 10 of the UK Internal Market Act 2020, so as to allow the change to the timeline.

This is the third delay but now provides time for the system to be considered further as to its practical day to day functionality and to be potentially aligned with schemes operated in the rest of the UK.

Law correct at the date of publication.
